 The website aims to:

Alert and inform the public to the existence of the Squadron.

Provide information and links on/about the Air Cadet Program.

Inform the squadron cadets and their parents on upcoming activities.

Provide other relevant information.

The 2 VandenBos Squadron was formed in August 2003 to serve the youth of Whitby and South Durham. Its air cadet membership has grown   quickly and now is over 100. The Squadron Staff, under the Commanding Officer, is comprised of 17 officers, civilian instructors and civilian volunteers. They are charged with dispensing the training program and with the development, care and welfare of the cadets during the program activities.

The Air Cadet program of youth developmental activities is tried and true, having existed and evolved since 1941. It offers structured, safe and supervised elements during the school year and a complement at summer camps for 35-40% of the Air Cadets. The program is conducted in an aviation and aeronautics context but comprises many sub-elements. The main ones are: leadership, instructional techniques, physical activities and fitness, music (the squadron has a 25 member marching band), aviation/aeronautics from flying to airport operations, citizenship and community service, socialization and travel. Reflecting the Air Cadet program’s goals is the motto:

To Learn - To Serve - To Advance

Like numerous other squadrons, the Squadron Sponsoring Committee is the official Sponsor of the Squadron. The Squadron Sponsoring Committee is made up of dedicated members of the community along with some parents of cadets. Its role is to partner with the Commanding Officer and staff to support and supplement the squadron training program and activities. This has many facets from organizing and conducting fund raising to meet the agreed budget, to securing and paying for training, office and storage facilities, to registering and screening the adult members at the squadron, to facilitating recruiting of cadets and adult members, to holding monthly meetings with the commanding officer and staff, to conducting public relations, to providing honours, awards and recognition, to purchasing training equipment, band instruments, supplies and accoutrements, to organizing the annual banquet and other cadet social activities, to supporting the year-end ceremonial review, to conducting the annual Effective Speaking competition, to subsidizing the yearly citizenship trip to distant cities, to providing full financial management of the squadron funds and assets, including statutory reporting to Revenue Canada and the Air Cadet League of Canada, and more.

The Squadron Sponsoring Committee, as are cadets and staff, is greatly appreciative of our sponsoring Area Community Service Clubs, Businesses, Associations and Organizations and of the Whitby and south Durham Community-at-large for their generous support in many direct and indirect ways.

(NB The Squadron Sponsoring Committee is a Registered Charity and does accept donations, including through payroll deduction designations via the United Way or a company/business’s own program.)
